Orange County’s water supplier, Metropolitan Water District, is facing a lawsuit accusing the company of unfair business practices and willful misrepresentation.
The lawsuit, filed by an attorney in California, claims that the water supplier uses a chemical in its water that they say helps prevent tooth decay, but has never been approved to do so. A statement from Metropolitan Water District says that they use the fluorosilicic acid for “the safety and reliability this treatment chemical offers.”
While the lawsuit does not challenge whether fluoridation should be used by water suppliers, it questions whether or not the practice should be regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
In addition, the lawsuit is not seeking monetary damages.
