Decrease in business formation in California

Surprising statistics show that California experienced a dramatic and sudden decline in new business formation in 2010.

In 2009, California ranked first in the country for new business formation.  However, last year, the state moved to second to last in the country with Michigan being the only state to experience less growth in new businesses.

In 2008, 32,820 new businesses were formed in California.  In 2009, another 12,529 new businesses formed in the state.  Last year, 4,632 jobs were lost in California.

In July, California had the second highest unemployment rate at 12 percent.  Even Nevada, the only state with a higher unemployment rate, experienced greater business formation.
